There’s a widely believed superstition about Friday, the 13th in France. It is supposed to be a lucky or unlucky day, but at any rate, a special day.
What’s the EuroMillions? (hint: the answer is in its name)
The jackpot of the EuroMillions (the european Powerball) is likely to be higher than usual on these days (a few dozen million euros).
I’m not sure whether more people are likely to gamble. I know I am!
Where does this superstition come from? (hint: it’s historical)
- the last meal of Christ was on a Thursday, there were thirteen guests, and Christ was arrested the next day
- the french Knight Templars were arrested by order of the french king on a Friday, the 13th (in 1307).
There’s a (vague) connection with the “Game of thrones” by George R. R. Martin. Do you know why?
There’s a series of novels about the Knight Templars, called “the Accursed Kings” by Mr. Maurice Druon, that were written between 1955 and 1977. George R. R. Martin once called them “the original game of thrones” because they had inspired his work. They are about the death of Philip the 4th (the king who destroyed the Knight Templars) and the vicious fight for power that ensued in the next few years. They’re very good historical novels.
